At Takims Holidays, we have been working hard to increase our conservation efforts to ensure we contribute towards protecting the delicate ecosystem that we call home.
Poaching remains a major challenge in Tanzania, which is why we have partnered with the Frankfurt Zoological Society on a special anti-poaching initiative called the Serengeti De-Snaring Program.
Snaring targets species like wildebeest, zebra and antelope to be sold as bush meat. But they are deadly traps for many other animals such as predators or elephants.
The goals of this program are twofold:
1. Conserving wildlife and creating a sustainable future for the tourism value chain.
2. To establish a job for ex-poachers and give them an alternative means of livelihood.
Facts:
On average 35 snares are collected a day.
The most snared game are wildebeest, zebra and other antelopes that have a good game meat market.
Snares are non-selective so even animals like elephant, hyena, & lions are also caught.
When the de-snaring team finds a poacher den, they destroy the bush meat and other materials found to discourage poaching activities.
Achievements:
Over the past 16 months, the program has resulted in:
17,536 snares removed
125 poachers camps found and destroyed
157 animals released alive
This is a unique project and the only one of its kind in the Serengeti National Park. Takims Holidays dedicates a portion of all safari based income towards funding the special anti-poaching teams involved in this project.
We are looking forward to a productive year ahead with additional conservation projects in order to extend our commitment to conservation.
